Present-day missions take Band members all over (and sometimes outside) the Commonwealth of Virginia. They perform in concert, marching band, and small ensembles for military and civilian functions alike, with a repertoire that ranges from the classics to pop music to Broadway and motion picture hits. The Band performs between 30 and 40 musical missions each year for over 300,000 people.
Cost for the event is free, but you will be required to have an official ticket to enter the theatre. Tickets are on a first come, first serve basis, and you can pick up tickets at The Lincoln Theatre.
And that's just part of the commemoration! On the Monday before Memorial Day, over 1,000 flags will begin being displayed on the Court House lawn. On Thursday, Rolling Thunder will host a ceremony at 12pm on the Court House steps in honor of lost loved ones. Then, on Sunday, May 28th, "Letters From Home," an annual event sponsored by the VFW Post 4667 will be hosting a free concert at 3pm at The Lincoln Theatre!
On Monday, May 29th at 10am, join us for our annual Memorial Day Grand Parade on Main Street in downtown Marion, with a patriotic program and community cookout following the parade at the VFW on Goolsby Street.

On Friday, June 23rd, join the Marcus Boyd Band as they perform LIVE at our Summer Concert Series at Marion Farmers Market at 8pm! Locals have come to love Marcus's music when he performs at our local restaurant, 27 Lions. Now, he's performing at one of our free concerts, and we couldn't be more excited to have him back in Marion!
Growing up and continuing his roots in Southwest Virginia, Marcus's love for music brought him to learn to play guitar, piano, bass, banjo and mandolin at a very young age. His music has attracted attention in Nashville and beyond, even garnering him attention as he passed auditions for NBC's "The Voice." Marcus plays venues all over Virginia, the Carolinas, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia and enjoys the live aspect of performing. His self-produced album "The Bird" was released in February 2014 and is available on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play Store, eMusic and other online music retailers.
Tuesday, July 4th - Rock, White and Blues Cruise-In and Concert featuring Jigsaw Jane on Broad Street, 7pm
With the successes of downtown's Broad Street Cruise-ins, we'll be hosting a special themed cruise-in to celebrate Independence Day! At 6pm, all car-enthusiasts are encouraged to come downtown and participate in the cruise-in. We'll be giving out special prizes and awards to the best patriotic-themed car!
At 7pm, Jigsaw Jane, a regional favorite, will be performing LIVE in concert on Broad Street! Bring a lawn chair or blanket to set on, your favorite dancin' shoes and enjoy listening to some rock n' roll!
Friday, July 14th - Marion Downtown Summer Concert Series: Adam Bolt & the Cutters, 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Continuing downtown Marion's FREE Concert Series is Adam "Bovine" Bolt, commonly referred to as The Abingdon Troubadour, and for years, was the front man for The Ordinary Bitters. He has also fronted several other projects from incubation to hatchlings. There is no comparison to Bolt's highly acclaimed "solo style" that can guide you through your own demons via yodeling just to have you shouting out hip-hop lyrics back to the stage! Bolt describes his music as "Sensationalized, Cynical, and Seasoned Songs in the Key of Country", and his live performance will have you laughing, crying, singing, and dancing! Music is free, and food and beverages will be available for purchase at the event.
MARION'S BIGGEST WEEKEND OF THE YEAR!
Friday, July 21st - Street Dance on Main Street: Music Featuring Phantom, 7:00pm - 10:00pm
The third weekend in July is always the biggest weekend in Marion. The Arts & Crafts Festival at Hungry Mother State Park, LIVE music events downtown, a Chili Cook-off and so much more, you're bound to fall in love with America's Coolest Hometown!
On Friday night, join Marion Downtown as they host a street dance on Main Street in front of the Court House. Local favorite, Phantom, will be performing live 7:00pm - 10:00pm, and MDRA will be selling food and drinks as a fundraiser. The event is FREE and folks are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, some dancin' shoes and come out to enjoy some old school rock n' roll music!
Saturday, July 22nd - 31st Annual Marion Downtown Chili Cook-off, Shine n' Show Car Show and Music Event
Once again, Marion's biggest event of the year is set for the third full weekend in July. For over thirty years, the Chili Cook-off has become a homecoming event for locals, and a must-see experience for out-of-towners.
This year, Marion Downtown is expanding the event even more, and you don't want to miss this FREE event! From kids activities to one of the region's best car shows, to a Chili Championship and food eating competitions, to outdoor seating and beer gardens, to LIVE music performances from some of the regions favorite bands - you're bound to have a great time!
At 12pm, Jigsaw Jane will be back in downtown Marion performing LIVE on Broad Street for the Shine n' Show Car Show. Whether you own a classic cruiser or muscle car, or even a decked out motorcycle, everyone is encouraged to participate in the show. Line up starts at 10am and registration is $25 to enter.
This year, downtown will have two music stages. Yes, you read that correctly. TWO!
At 5pm, NewTown takes the main stage at the lower end of Main Street. Based out of Lexington, Kentucky, the band features five artists demonstrating a vast array of acoustic music styling. Bringing a feel of "Newgrass" sounds, they create a unique sound that can definitely be appreciated in Southwest Virginia.
At 6pm, Marcus Boyd Band will be performing again in downtown Marion for the second time this summer. Join the band as they perform on the chili stage in front of Marion Town Hall! A native of Southwest Virginia, Boyd has a love for country music and Marion.
And the music just keeps getting bigger and better! At 7pm, Annabelle's Curse takes the main stage.
Annabelle’s Curse is a five-piece alternative folk band hailing from Bristol TN/VA, and sort of like the town where they were born, their music sits on the border between two places. One place finds them unplugged, on a large front porch, reveling in the old folk songs that they were raised on while their nearest and dearest friends and family drink and sing along. The other place is plugged in, awash in neon lights and drunk on the rock and roll spirit that drives them to leave the porch, pile in a van, and play long into the night while the anonymous drinkers dance. Their music feels like these two different places at the same time, but like the city that they call home, it’s just two sides of one place and one sound – a sound that they can truly call their own.
Remember Virginia Ground? They're back in business, and will be performing LIVE at the Chili Cook-off at 8pm on the chili stage! Virginia Ground plays such a unique style of music that they created their own genre just to describe it: That is the Appalachiaphonic. Continuing to impress everyone throughout the Southwest Region, we're excited to have them perform in Marion!
Back by popular demand, headlining the event is none other than Folk Soul Revival, set to perform on the main stage at 9pm. The band is a favorite throughout the region, and has performed at festival's throughout Southwest Virginia and the Tri-cities. They aim to please their fans with their radio-ready lyrics, driving melodies and amazing vocals - you don't want to miss their live performance on Main Street in downtown Marion during the biggest event of the year! Friday, July 28th - Marion Downtown Summer Concert Series: My New Favorites, 8-10pm
Marion Downtown's Summer Concert Series at the Farmers Market wraps up on Friday, July 28th with another local favorite, My New Favorites. Join us at 8pm at the Farmers Market Pavilion for free music, food, beverages and a good time!
My New Favorites has deep roots in traditional music, but their branches spread across many musical styles. Individually, they play bluegrass, old-time, blues, rock & roll, Celtic, Cajun and classical. Together, they have created a harmonic union of musical genres that draws inspiration from many sources…but never strays too far from the hills they call home. Their compelling songs showcase fine harmony singing and are complimented by a mix of traditional and modern instruments to create music that is both familiar and brand new.
